Yap yap yap...

I'm sure all of you have heard something like this before - that you should backup everything and backup often! Well, my friend's computer at work might have been hacked so today, I took it to the IT guys and without thinking, I just replied yeah, 2 partitions (cause it's originally set up as 2 partitions). So now, we've just lost almost a month's worth of work. Since I can't but feel somewhat responsible :P I'll take this time to tell you all that you could be next so do back up your important documents!

A Taste of Tomorrow, Today!

Man, doing this ura thing is actually not bad - so far... Although I'm not getting paid 1 cent (well, hopefully that'll change, but who knows...), this is my busiest term ever - everyday I'm doing or learning something new. Whether it be machining or trying to force LabView to run dlls or C code... Just today I left at like almost 9pm, but then again, I was literally watching Kuo doing all of the work as my C skillz just ain't l33t enough (and I don't usually leave that late...) Hopefully we'll (by we, I mean Kuo) finish soon so I can get cracking on my topic (OCTs and DMDs). But what I'm really glad for is that it gives me a taste of what grad may be like as I'm working with both a masters and a PhD student, so it's a good heads up for me. Oh yeah, the phd student is from China and the masters one lived in Japan for a year, so perhaps I can brush up on those languages, although I doubt it... Ah well, daijoubu...

Hrmmm, I'm now hooked on horror movies (preferably Japanese/Asian as they tend to be scarier...) Sigh, time to go as I've gotta actually make it to work by 9 tomorrow, instead of my usual 9:45-10am :D

Microsoft R0x0rs!

No meaningful blog today by me (as if any of mine are)... but I've gotta say, I love M$, as I just got more free stuff from them (I got Office, but hey, it's free, so I can't complain :P)... Subarashii desu ka? Now all I need is a job offer from them... If not, at least gimme some free/cheap games!!!!!! (cough k3v cough cough :D)

Oh yeah, on another note, congrats to UW's Midnight Sun VII! http://midnightsun.uwaterloo.ca/ in case you're interested.

True Calling

No, this isn't about that Fox show... This is actually about OAC being scrapped, specialization of programs, etc. As usual, I get my odd ideas out of the blue and today, while going through OGS applications, I realized that damn, I've been living under a rock for the past 2 years. For example, I did not realize that OGS looks back 20 courses (approximately 2 years) and basically the same with NSERC for marks. I mean, during my 2B term, which is the beginning of the 20 courses that will be used, I was not aware my performance during that term would affect my chances of grad school! Unfortunately, 2B was also our hardest term also, but what the heck, shit happens. It's just so odd looking back now to see how that one term (and prolly others later on too, but mostly that one term as my avg dropped almost 10% that term) essentially crushed my chance of getting money.

But that isn't what I wanted to talk about. Thinking about how my actions so early in life is impacting me now, my coworkers and I got to talking about OAC, CEGEP, etc. and how we need those extra years. I still know tons of people today who aren't too sure what they want to do after undergrad, so most are thinking about running back to grad school because... well, they're not too sure what else they'd do. Heck, that's partly why I want to run back into school! But we've gotta stop running eventually don't we? Anyway, we decided that having more time before university to try out different courses/subjects is better since a lot of us in our program detest it now and might not have made the same choice again if given the opportunity to. I am grateful for my chance to take courses such as US history, biotech, comtech, etc. even if I hardly remember anything anymore. At least I know about them now and they're still what I'm interested in. If I hadn't taken those, then I think I would be in more dispair as I absolutely hate most of the courses taught to us. I just don't care about EM waves and stochastic processes! So yeah, we think there are some ppl out there who's gonna graduate and just be totally lost as to what they should do next or pursue simply because they haven't found what they like. I'm quite curious as to what the readers think...

Also, this leads to specialization... Over these past few years, our school has started new programs (not just options) like mechatronics, software eng, and eventually nano, etc. While fields are expanding with each new discovery, we are forced to choose between specializing in an area or try to take it all in (a la systems) but this here I find to be an iffy area. One of the things I found annoying with my program is that it covered some stuff that I HOPE I won't have to deal with in the future, and likewise for other students (ie those that don't like programming...) because quite simply, I don't have enough spaces to take courses that I am interested in (ie biomed/nano/bioeng, etc.). But then if I didn't get to try them, how else would I know that I hate those stuff? I dunno, but I guess we can't make everyone happy, but that nanotech program sounds like fun! So yeah, for this one, I've really no clue on what to make of it. Maybe it's just too hard to accomodate every student (ie specialization for some, generic for others...) But maybe that's what work terms are for.... to try out new things...

Ah well, my mind's going blank now, but I've just gotta say that I hope this work term will be more rewarding than previous ones, if not financially, then at least in terms of experience and knowledge. Who knows, maybe I'll find my true calling - if not, there's always more school :D

Like a Rock

Man, my internet here suck ass. For the past few days I've been constantly disconnected, can't access sites normally or taking like 5 hrs to dl a 4mb file. @$#^$#$!@@! How much I depend on internet now! It's ultra annoying cause I use it as my primary source of info and is a major form of communication. Bleah! Anyway, I just finished watching Windstruck (if you watch Asian and/or Korean movies, you'd prolly know what this is - if not, it's the prequel to My Sassy Girl) and while it was supposed to be sad, I didn't find it to be that sad. As a result, I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of any good sad movies. If so, pls let me know!

The Wal-Mart Ratio

Actually, I couldn't think of a better name so that's what I'll call it. I've decided to share this after reading on Orangefever his comment that Wal-Mart there was more expensive than here in Ontario. Anyway, after having looked for and bought tons of DVDs, I can tell you that Wal-Mart is one of the cheapest places around to get DVDs and games. DVDSoon.com used to be uber cheap too when they were relatively young (and the fact that they're based in Quebec helps somewhat too), but now their prices have gone up a bit, but are still pretty cheap compare to most places. But anyway, this blog is about the Wal-Mart ratio - and by that I mean the ratio of prices between Canadian Wal-Marts (well, at least the ones in Ontario) and the prices listed on their US website (www.walmart.com). As the extreme lazy bum that I am, I prefer to shop around online. Unfortunately, www.walmart.ca is as useful to me as www.wal-martchina.com is since they're both informational sites only and doesn't actually list products other than perhaps what's in their weekly flyer. So anyway, after having bought several games and DVDs from Wal-Mart, I've noticed a trend that might perhaps help you. This has worked for me for the most part (but I've only compared games and DVDs) and perhaps you can use it for the same items or even other items if you can confirm my finding. So what did I find? I found that to get the Canadian Wal-Mart price, you simply multiply the price listed on their US site by 1.2! Thus, an item that's USD$49.99 will be approximately CAD$59.99, give or take a few dollars. Neat eh? Well, I found it neat as that meant I can now compare Wal-Mart prices in the comfort of my own seat. But you shouldn't take this to be always the case as I have found exceptions, but I have found it to be quite accurate for guessimating.

Oh, in addition, 1.2 is less than the exchange rate, so it is more expensive in the states... Why? I don't know... Man, I can't believe I just wrote all that about freaking Wal-Mart and their Canadian price....
